Rotary Ambassador Scholarship

District 6220

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship Sub-Committee

John Weting

Chairman

212 Timber Lane

Marquette, MI  49855-9359

January 2008

Dear Rotary Ambassadorial Club Chair and/or President,

I hope that 2008 finds you health and happy, it is amazing how quickly 2007 passed.

The New Year marks a time when we need to start seeking candidates for the 2009-2010 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship.  Here are a couple of deadline dates:

  • Completed applications are due to the above address no latter than Wednesday, 02 April 2008.
  • Applicants selected for a District interview will be interviewed on Saturday, 12 or 19 April 2008 in Menominee, MI.  Applicants must be present for the interview.  I apologize for the uncertainty of the interview date, the 19th had been set aside but a work commitment may cause the interviews to be held a week earlier.  I hope to have a definite interview date by mid January.

The Rotary Foundation web page offers valuable information regarding the Scholarship, please review:

As you begin to seek candidates for this year, please encourage previously unsuccessful candidates to re-apply.  Having previously gone through the interview process, they will have a significant advantage.  Here are some observations from previous year’s applications and the process that you may want to share with your applicants:

  • Some applications are hand written- while it is not required for applications to be typed, applications that are typed are much more presentable, easier to read and will make a better impression on the interview committee and host district.  This year the application available from the RI Foundation website is a fillable PDF form.
  • The application forms are not properly completed, the following are examples of typical shortcomings:
  • Proper scholarship identification is not made.
  • All required information not provided.
  • Improper listing of country and university choice.
  • The student is to complete the top portions of the reference forms and language form.  Much of the information in this portion is missing.
  • The application instructions are clear regarding the applicants identification on the pages of the essay.  This is often not followed.
  • Applicants have not properly researched the role and mission of The Rotary Foundation and Rotary International.
  • The applicant MUST have a clear plan of how they will represent the District before, during and after their Ambassadorial Scholarship year.

This year we are limiting the two required essays to two pages each with a line spacing of 1.5 and one inch borders (top, bottom, left, right).  This has become necessary due to the number of applicants and to provide a reasonable limit to the essay length.

My role as the District 6220 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship Sub-Committee Chairman and the role of the interview committee is to do our best to assure that we send highly qualified candidates who will represent The Foundation and District 6220 well.  Through The Foundation, District 6220 is investing up to $23,000 of our foundation contributions in this individual.  The applicant needs to put forth an effort that is worthy of a $23,000 scholarship.

As you seek applicants for the “Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship”, please also keep in mind the “Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution” for 2009-1011.  This is a two year, $50,000 scholarship offered at seven partner universities throughout the world.  You can find detailed information at, http://www.rotary.org/en/StudentsAndYouth/EducationalPrograms/RotaryCentersForInternationalStudies/Pages/ridefault.aspx.  If you have a possible applicant please contact me, applications for this schoarship are due at the Foundation by 01 July 2008 and must be interviewed at the Club and District level.

Please help us seek highly qualified candidates for these excellent scholarships.  Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Thank you,

John Weting
